Alonzo Mourning reflects on his journey from NBA greatness to a life-threatening diagnosis of FSGS. The shock of kidney failure pushed him into a new purpose: raising awareness about kidney health, early detection, and genetic testing—especially in communities of color. Supported by his team and a family member who donated a kidney, Mourning fought his way back to the court and helped the Miami Heat win the 2006 championship. Today, he continues to advocate for research, education, and understanding of the APO L1 gene, encouraging others to take charge of their health and be aware of their family history.
